Portland's Milagro Presents ASTUCIAS POR HEREDAR UN SOBRINO A UN TIO
Censored in the late 18th Century by the Catholic Church, Astucias por heredar un sobrino a un tio (Tricks to Inherit: A Nephew from his Uncle) was the first play ever performed by Hispanic settlers in Central California where the original manuscript was preserved in the Santa Cruz/Monterey area. The original is now in the Bancroft Library at the University of Berkeley and the critical annotated edition by Dr. Pedro Garcia-Caro of the University of Oregon was published in 2016 by Arte Publico Press (Houston.) This will be the play's first production in over 200 years, presented in masterful commedia dell'arte style by director Robi Arce and a superb cast in the original Spanish verse with English supertitles.
Milagro Presents ASTUCIAS POR HEREDAR UN SOBRINO A UN TIO
Banned since 1792, this long-lost comedy of manners set in the Age of Revolution is one of the earliest pieces of theatre written and performed in the New World. According to Nicholas Kanellos in his book, A History of the Hispanic Theatre in the United States, Astucias is the first drama staged in California.
