What did our critic think of GYPSY: A MUSICAL FABLE at Music Theatre Wichita At Century II Concert Hall? There is a reason the musical Gypsy: A Musical Fable is a Golden Age classic. The text, suggested by the memoirs of Gypsy Rose Lee and written by Authur Laurents, is economical and succinct. Jule Styne’s music varies from catchy tunes to lush, foreboding orchestral maneuvers, and Sondheim’s nascent lyrics are simple and accessible, yet cut to the core of each scene’s objective.

The Prom a new musical with music by Matthew Sklar, lyrics by Chad Beguelin, and a book by Bob Martin and Chad Beguelin is based on an original concept by Jack Viertel. Directed and Choreographed by Casey Nicholaw, this explosive new musical took the stage by storm Tuesday night at the Straz Center, and with open arms, the audience welcomed this exceptional cast to the bay area. Boasting a primarily younger cast who danced and sang till everything was left on the stage, the audience was grooving in their seats and filled with joy all evening.

The role of Dolly Gallagher Levi, is a role embodied by some of the most respected performers, like Carol Channing, Ethel Merman, Barbara Streisand, Bette Middler, and Bernadette Peters. It's only fitting that the role in the Little Theatre production should go to a multi-hyphenate celebrating 40 years in local theatre, Karen Buchheim.

Is the show HILARIOUS? You bet your Channel suit it is. Are the ladies top-notch and in terrific voice? HELL YEAH, THEY ARE! Each and every line fluff, trip up and gaff onstage was grist for the ladies' comedy mill and each time something went awry or a joke didn't land, a fresh response (especially from Bootsie) saved the moment and brought on gales of laughter.

This 10th season's theme is 'Hello Jerry' and Michael and cast pay tribute to the incomparable composer Jerry Herman, bringing to the stage music form his popular musicals including Mame, Mack and Mabel, Grand Tour, La Cage Aux Folles and, of course, Hello Dolly. 'Hello Jerry' is directed by Jason Graae with musical direction by Christopher Marlowe. I had the opportunity to sit down with Michael Childer's to talk about this special tenth anniversary production, and more. Here are a few excerpts from that conversation …
