Smuin's Annual Gala Celebrates 23rd Season
Leaders in the arts and civic communities packed The Galleria for what became a sizzling evening celebrating one of the nation's most innovative and entertaining arts organizations at Smuin's Annual Gala. Co-chairs Patti and Jerry Hume, and Athena and John Konstin hosted the sparkling event, starring the Smuin dancers. The festive evening included a cocktail reception on the center's terrace, after which guests were seated on the main floor for a delectable dinner catered by McCall's with wines by Grgich Hills Estate. The Smuin dancers hit the stage, performing dazzling works created by Val Caniparoli and Michael Smuin that brought down the house. Held Sunday, March 19 at The Galleria at the San Francisco Design Center, the Gala raised more than $455,000, setting a new record for funds raised in support of Smuin's spectacular programming.

Met Museum to Display GRAND ILLUSIONS Staged Photography Exhibit, 8/10
Photographers, like ventriloquists, can cast 'voices' in a seemingly infinite number of genres and period styles. This does not negate the camera's direct relationship to the world-tying image to subject as naturally as a footprint-but instead reveals that photographs are always admixtures of fiction and reality tilted toward one end of the scale or the other. Grand Illusions: Staged Photography from the Met Collection, a survey of 40 photographs spanning the first 170 years of the medium, focuses on the ways in which artists have staged and composed images so that the imaginary is pictured as if it were real. The installation will explore photography's relationship with other mediums such as literature and film, as well as its persuasive powers when used in advertising.

The Met Museum Presents FATAL ATTRACTION: PIOTR UKLANSKI PHOTOGRAPHS, Now thru 8/16
Fatal Attraction: Piotr Ukla?ski Photographs at The Metropolitan Museum of Art will be the first survey of this provocative artist's photography. Known for working in a wide variety of media including installation, fiber art, resin paintings, and collage, Ukla?ski (born 1968) invests overlooked and exhausted styles with new meanings. This Polish-born, New York-based artist similarly explores cliched or obsolete photographic languages. Nearly half of the works on display in the Metropolitan Museum's exhibition will be from The Joy of Photography (1997-2007), the artist's seminal yet under-known series, in which he adopted the hackneyed subjects and styles of Eastman Kodak's 1979 how-to book for amateur photographers to create a rapturous ode to the medium, both ironic and sincere.
