Good Times, Fun, and Some Laughs: SWEET CHARITY at Cockpit In Court

Dated and flawed as I consider it, Sweet Charity is something of a landmark in the world of the American musical, and this rendition is admirable. And then there are those three big songs. You will definitely experience good times, fun and some laughs.

BWW Review: BIG POWER IN SMALL PACKAGES by Guest Critic Anne Shoemaker

Evita was one of Andrew Lloyd Webber's more controversial shows, depicting Argentina's beloved Eva Peron as a swindler, cheat, and power-hungry woman, willing to sleep her way to the top. Even when they made the movie almost 50 years after Eva's death, drastic rewrites and additional songs were made simply to film in Argentina. It's interesting to me how the attitude towards women in power have, in some respects, changed, but words like conniving, manipulating, whore, and the like still get tossed around; during intermission, I enjoyed a poignant, and a little heated, discussion of the parallels of this play in our current presidential race. Good theatre provokes discussion, and Spotlighter's Theatre put on a powerhouse of a musical that is very topical today.

BWW Reviews: FAC's Trip into REEFER MADNESS

It's not Mary Poppins; it's Mary Jane.
BWW Reviews: IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE at Theatreworks

How odd that Theatreworks should follow up Death of a Salesman, arguably the most brutal portrait of disappointed ambition, with It's a Wonderful Life, another tale of a man who suffers a series of unrealized ambitions and missed opportunities but who is held up not as a tragedy but an exemplar of a well-lived existence. If Willy Loman is the embodiment of the dark side of the American Dream, then George Bailey is the assurance that dream can be lived in simple and unexpected ways.
BWW Reviews: Fine Arts Center's THE DROWSY CHAPERONE - A Celebration of Musicals and Those Who Love Them

'I hate the theater; it's so disappointing,' may be the most ironic opening line in recent memory. The Drowsy Chaperone, is nothing less than a celebration of musical comedy in all its beautiful and frequently absurd glory, and the Fine Arts Center's production of it is as entertaining an experience as you can find in the region right now.
