CUNY Dance Initiative and Rovaco Dance Company Present KAMA
Rovaco Dance has announced the company's third evening length production, consisting of their first evening length work. Titled after the Sanskrit word for “desire, wish, longing,” KAMA explores taboo in sex and addiction. An initial merging of abstract concert dance with movement and imagery stemming from contemporary clubbing develops and distorts, representing casual sex with mechanical movement, and the tweaking phase of a high with pathological abandon as two individuals find a brief, profound tenderness that devolves into toxic heartbreak. Drawing from perspectives across sexual identities, KAMA portrays honest and inclusive physical narratives of our universally human quest for pleasure in a capitalist system that desensitizes us to humanity itself.

BWW Review: PRISCILLA is a Campy Disco Delight With Heart
PRISCILLA, QUEEN OF THE DESERT: THE MUSICAL is a jukebox musical adapted from Australian film director-writer Stephan Elliott's 1994 film The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert. Adapted by Elliott and Allan Scott, the musical uses well-known pop and disco songs as the score. It tells the story of two drag queens and a transgender woman who make a trip from Sydney across the desert in a bus they name Priscilla to do a drag show in the resort town of Alice Springs in the Australian desert. Along the way, they encounter a slew of odd characters, homophobia and love in the most unexpected of places. The original production debuted in Australia at the Lyric Theatre, Sydney in October 2006. The Australian success of the show lead to a two-year West End production and finally the Bette Midler produced Broadway debut in 2011. The production now on stage at Zach Theatre is one of the first regional productions of the show.

BWW Interviews: Barry Doss Takes Us Behind The Scenes of Stages Repertory Theatre's MARIE ANTOINETTE
I was lucky to get so much of Barry Doss' time. He is resident Costume Designer for Dance at Sam Houston State University and Stages Repertory Theatre's upcoming production of MARIE ANTOINETTE. When I called, he was in his workshop in Huntsville patterning and cutting. Fresh off Broadway, by way of Fort Worth, Texas, he came home to Houston last spring - February to be exact - and immediately got to work on the anachronistic beauty that is MARIE ANTOINETTE.
