Anthony Newley was a British actor, singer, songwriter, and composer who made a name for himself in both the West End and on Broadway. Born on September 24, 1931, in London, Newley began his career in entertainment as a child actor, appearing in films such as "Oliver Twist" and "The Adventures of Robin Hood."
In the 1950s, Newley began to focus on his music career, writing hit songs such as "What Kind of Fool Am I?" and "The Candy Man." He also appeared in several West End productions, including "Stop the World - I Want to Get Off" and "The Roar of the Greasepaint - The Smell of the Crowd," both of which he co-wrote with Leslie Bricusse.
In 1961, Newley made his Broadway debut in "Stop the World - I Want to Get Off," which he also directed. The show was a critical and commercial success, earning Newley a Tony Award nomination for Best Actor in a Musical. He went on to star in several other Broadway productions, including "The Roar of the Greasepaint - The Smell of the Crowd" and "The Good Old Bad Old Days."
Newley's success on Broadway led to opportunities in film and television. He appeared in several movies, including "Doctor Dolittle" and "Can Hieronymus Merkin Ever Forget Mercy Humppe and Find True Happiness?" He also had his own television series, "The Strange World of Gurney Slade," which he wrote, produced, and starred in.

In addition to his hit songs, he composed the scores for several films, including "Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory" and "Can Hieronymus Merkin Ever Forget Mercy Humppe and Find True Happiness?"
