BWW Review: Lyric's WOZZECK Stirs the Brain in Cracking Production

Alban Berg's opera Wozzeck is not the first to swirl with immortal themes like power play, lust, betrayal, and death (far, far from it), but thanks to the circumstances of its composition - further emphasized by Sir David McVicar's new production at the Lyric Opera - it is prominent in its search to question the meaning of it all. So, whether or not philosophizing about the inherent nature of man gets you up and out in the morning, a visit to the Civic Opera House would very much be in order for a beguiling production that, while leaving one starved for melody, makes for cracking drama and discussion.

Esa-Pekka Salonen and the Philharmonia Orchestra Bring Berg's Wozzeck to Walt Disney Concert Hall, 11/13

LA Phil Conductor Laureate Esa-Pekka Salonen returns to Walt Disney Concert Hall with the Philharmonia Orchestra, Tuesday, November 13, at 8 pm. The special one-night-only performance presents Alban Berg's operatic masterpiece of musical Expressionism, Wozzeck. The composer adapted the libretto from an incomplete 19th-century play's unordered scenes, and created important roles for the orchestra as well as the singers: onstage there is a marching band for a military parade and a boozy dance band - including guitar, accordion and a deliberately out-of-tune upright piano - for the tavern scene. The international cast includes German soprano Angela Denoke as Marie, the role she sang in her Salzburg Festival debut.
