Cantor Andrea Rae Markowicz is the Cantor of Am Shalom in Glencoe, Illinois. Ordained from The Debbie Friedman School of Sacred Music of the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion (HUC-JIR), Cantor Markowicz has an extensive background in music, both secular and liturgical, Jewish education, and youth work. She holds a Master of Sacred Music from HUC-JIR, a Master of Music in Voice Performance from The Cleveland Institute of Music, and a Bachelor of Music in Voice Performance from the University of Michigan.
Prior to beginning her studies at HUC-JIR, Cantor Markowicz was a Cantorial Soloist/Intern at various congregations including Central Synagogue of NYC, Congregation Agudath B’nai Israel in Lorain, OH, Temple Beth Or in Montgomery, AL, Temple Beth Shalom in Annapolis, MD and Temple Shomer Emunim in Toledo, OH. She also maintains close ties with Israeli Progressive (Reform) congregation Ohel Avraham in Haifa and Independent congregation Beit Tefilah Israeli in Tel Aviv.
Cantor Markowicz has toured Israel as Abigail Adams in 1776 with Israel Musicals; and the USA with Camelot, starring Robert Goulet, and as Meip Gies in the original cast of the musical Anne Frank: A Voice Heard. NYC credits include Carnegie Hall in Noel Coward’s Centennial, Radio City Music Hall for the live national network broadcast of The ESPY Awards, and various Off-Broadway productions including Queen Vashti in the premiere of the musical Esther: Queen of Persia. Some favorite USA Regional credits are Hair, Fiddler On The Roof (Hodel), Guys and Dolls (Sarah Brown), Over The Moon With Gilbert & Sullivan (Marion Terry), The Magic Flute (Papagena), Ruddigore (Rose Maybud), The Boyfriend (Polly Browne), The Mikado (Peep Bo), and Tessa in The Gondoliers. Concert performances include: lead soloist in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Music Of The Night and Cameron Mackintosh’s Encore, Mr. Producer!; Shalom Broadway and Today’s Broadway with Broadway Pops International; and several performances around the USA of Burton Beerman’s Tikvah: Concert Of Hope, Enlightenment & Remembrance, inspired by her grandfather Philip Markowicz, a Holocaust survivor and Torah scholar.
