BIO

Alice Eve Cohen is a playwright, solo theatre artist, and author. Winner of the Jane Chambers Feminist Playwriting Award, the National Jewish Playwriting Contest , Elle Literary Grand Prix for Nonfiction, and Oprah Magazine 25 Best Books of Summer, her plays have been presented at theatres on four continents, including the Kitchen Theatre, New York Theatre Workshop, New Georges, Cherry Lane Theatre, Six Points Theatre, Philadelphia Women’s Theatre Festival, LA Women’s Theatre Festival, Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center, Jewish Repertory Theatre of Western NY, U Michigan, Princeton, Northwestern, Barnard College, and at festivals and theatres in Europe, Israel, Canada, and the Caribbean. Her award-winning memoirs, What I Thought I Knew (Viking, Penguin) and The Year My Mother Came Back (Algonquin Books), have received critical acclaim, and Cohen’s plays adapted from her memoirs have been performed at theatres in the US and Canada.
Her plays include Oklahoma Samovar, In the Cervix of Others, Hotel Limbo, What I Thought I Knew, Mrs. Satan & The Nasty Woman, Thin Walls, The Owl Was a Baker’s Daughter, and The Year My Mother Came Back.
Cohen has written television for CBS and Nickelodeon, her monologues appear in six "Years Best" anthologies, including Best Women's Stage Monologues 2024 (Smith & Kraus), and her plays are published by NoPassport Press. She has received fellowships, grants, and awards from the New NY Council on the Arts, the NEA, VCCA, the Orchard Project, Poets & Writers, Meet the Composer, and an Emmy Award Special Commendation. A finalist for the O’Neill National Playwriting Conference and for the McKnight National Residency and Commission, her plays have been nominated for five regional Broadway World Awards. A New York Theatre Workshop Usual Suspect, she is a member of Ensemble Studio Theater, the EST Playwrights Unit, Honor Roll!, Jewish Theatre Circle, the Dramatists Guild and Authors Guild. She holds an MFA from The New School and a BA from Princeton University. Alice teaches at The New School, where she received the University Distinguished Teaching Award.
