BIO

Alan Blumenfeld is one of the hardest working veteran character actors in Hollywood. His lengthy and detailed Filmography on The Internet Movie Database (IMDb) spans his work for the past three decades.

If you set your TiVo or DVR, you can record all of the reruns of Alan’s past film and TV work as they appear on television. The 2011 year had Alan guest starring on THE MENTALIST, ZEKE AND LUTHER and just beginning work on the independent film, FLUID. Depending on your age, the kinds of shows you like and your depth of dedication to watching movies and television, you may recognize him from any number of shows. Maybe you remember him from the films TIN MEN or RIGHTEOUS KILL or IN HER SHOES. Or as a recurring character in the television series HEROES or BROOKLYN BRIDGE. He’s played hundreds of characters one time or another on so many half hour and hour long shows as well as movies of the week that it makes him smile to think about your delight when you read the list and recognize your favorite shows of the past and present. For this season, watch for his upcoming role on TOUCH and the Progressive Insurance commercial.

He got his start in the theater – and he works on stage constantly. He has appeared on Broadway, in many regional companies, and is currently associated in Los Angeles with Theatricum Botanicum, A Noise Within, and South Coast Rep.

In addition to his busy acting career, Alan enjoys teaching acting as an adjunct professor at Pomona College.

Review: Shakespeare's TWELFTH NIGHT Offers Songs of Love and Laughter in the Beautiful Woods at Theatricum Botanicum

William Shakespeare's rollicking and ever-popular comedy of mistaken identity, TWELFTH NIGHT, brings its magical combination of mischief, madness and romance into the outdoor amphitheater at Will Geer's Theatricum Botanicum this summer where it plays in rep through September 28. Written in 1601 and first seen in the Inns of Court shortly after Christmas (hence, the title), the holiday was celebrated as a festival during which everything was made delightfully topsy-turvy, much like the world of the play's Illyria. And you could not ask for a more ideal cast of characters to bring The Bard's non-stop, high energy hijinks to life.

BWW Review: ARGONAUTIKA Brings Gods, Monsters, Mortals, and Kings to Life at A Noise Within

The best way to characterize Mary Zimmerman's adaptation of the mythical tale of Jason and the Argonauts is as a playground for adults in which theatre artists use every storytelling trick in the book to bring gods, monsters, mortals, and kings to life. Puppets, masks, stilts and aerial silks trade stage time with original music, dashing fight scenes, and flights of fancy in Jason's epic adventure to find the Golden Fleece.

BWW review: Sierra Madre Playhouse Offers Brilliant Production of THE GIN GAME

D.L. Coburn's Pulitzer Prize winning The Gin Game with its focus on two elderly people in a run down nursing facility circa 1977 is rarely if ever revived in Los Angeles. Why? I'm not sure. It requires great actors, but LA does have them. Maybe it's the theme. Too depressing? No excuse! The play is a brilliant, thought-provoking work of art. On the surface it's exceedingly funny but underneath, a seriously disquieting potboiler for seniors. Loneliness, and insufficient finances for decent old age care create a bleak outlook. Currently onstage at the Sierra Madre Playhouse through October 6, real life husband and wife Alan Blumenfeld and Katherine James beautifully play Weller Martin and Fonsia Dorsey under the meticulous direction of Christian Lebano.
