BIO

Adrian Vaux (1936-2012) studied design at the Slade School. He was house designer at London's Mermaid Theatre 1964-1970, house designer at Leicester Phoenix and subsequently at the Haymarket 1971-1980. He designed many productions during this time, some of which transferred to the West End, including My Fair Lady, Cause Celebre and Tomfoolery. He was house designer at the Old Vic 1980-1982, where his credits included The Merchant of Venice and The Relapse. Adrian began working in Israel in 1968, designing productions for the Habimah, Cameri, Haifa and Jerusalem Theatres. His association with Sobol began with original productions of Meininger's Night, Ghetto, Palestinian Girl, Adam, Jerusalem Syndrome and Nice Toni. This association led to his working in Germany and the USA. Many of these productions raised highly controversial issues, both political and social, such as the "great silence" surrounding discussions of the Holocaust and the Israeli/Palestinian conflict. From 2000 Adrian worked on designs for USA and UK tours of Miss Saigon and Oliver! for Cameron Mackintosh and his associates.

BWW Review: MISS SAIGON Tour Lands At OKC Broadway, A Sensational Production Of A Problematic Show

The tour of MISS SAIGON is a heartbreaking, epic, sensational production of a problematic show. Restaging MISS SAIGON in 2020 feels more unsteady than it might have 30 years ago. All in all, MISS SAIGON brings devastating, gritty realism to some problematic events. While the show's writing may feel dated at times, the production values and performances are first class, and I'm grateful to OKC Broadway for bringing in these tours of the highest caliber.

BWW Review: Stunning MISS SAIGON Revival at Segerstrom Center Can't Wipe Away Its Outdated Problematic Motifs

30 years after its stage debut, experiencing MISS SAIGON nowadays exposes just how outdated and out-of-touch it is with our increasingly diverse world view. The musical's original production---which first debuted in the West End in 1989 before transferring to Broadway in 1991---became a global hit despite some loud, very understandable controversy. Most audiences, however, ignored the accusations of orientalism, misogyny, and white-washing and instead focused on the show's epic melodrama and theatrical splendor, much of it powered by the lush music of Claude-Michel Schönberg and the lyrics by Alain Boublil and Richard Maltby Jr. The show continues at Orange County's Segerstrom Center for the Arts in Costa Mesa through October 13, 2019.
