Rock And Roll Is Here To Stay! The McCallum Theatre Presents BEST OF DOO WOP - VOLUME 1 Image

The City of Rancho Mirage and the McCallum Theatre present Best of Doo Wop - Volume II on Sunday, November 18, at 3:00pm. This year's Doo Wop lineup features Danny & The Juniors, Remember When: A Tribute to the Platters, Johnny Tillotson, The Safaris, The Alley Cats, Comedy Host John Wing and The American Gold Band.

Danny & the Juniors
Danny and The Juniors began singing together in the early 1950s in Philadelphia and scored their first hit with their original song, "At the Hop." Numerous hits followed, including "Rock And Roll Is Here To Stay," "Twistin' USA," and "Pony Express." Now, in their sixth decade, Danny and The Juniors continue to entertain audiences around the world. Their wholesome, fun-loving stage show is embellished with comedy, impressions and bright costumes, while still preserving the rich history of their music.

Remember When: A Tribute to the Platters
The Platters' first release, "Only You," stayed on the Billboard charts for 22 weeks in 1955. Less than one month later, "The Great Pretender" became a #1 hit. Since their first two chart toppers, The Platters' string of hits included "My Prayer," "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes," "Harbor Lights," and many more. The Platters sold over 89 million records, performed in more than 91 countries, and received over 200 awards from around the world. The Platters were inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame in 1990.

Johnny Tillotson
Johnny's Top Ten hits on the pop, country and adult contemporary charts included "Poetry in Motion," "Without You," "Send Me the Pillow that You Dream On," and many more. As a songwriter, his first Grammy nomination was for "It Keeps Right On a Hurtin'." He became one of the first cross-over artists, bringing country music to the pop market. His second Grammy nomination, as a singer, was for "Heartaches by the Number." Johnny had 9 Top Ten hits and 15 Top 40 hits, making him one of the top 100 recording artists of the rock era.

Jimmy Stephens of the Safaris
As lead singer of the Safaris, Jimmy recorded "Image of a Girl" in 1960. It became an instant hit in the Los Angeles area, and sold more than one million copies worldwide. The group toured with popular acts, including The Platters, Fabian, Bobby Vee, Brenda Lee, and Jackie Wilson, among others. After a few years, the members went their separate ways, but Jimmy continued singing and now sings around the Los Angeles area. He is appearing again with the Safaris performing their smash hit "Image of a Girl".

The Alley Cats
Formed at Fullerton College in 1987, The Alley Cats made it to the forefront of a cappella music with their renditions of timeless Doo Wop classics. The Cats have performed with celebrities, including Jay Leno, Rascal Flatts, and The Beach Boys. Whether entertaining the President at the White House, or "edutaining" students in their nationally recognized Arts Education program, The Alley Cats bring the same level of energy to every show. It's no wonder that they have earned the title of "America's Premier Doo Wop Group."

Comedy Host John Wing
Canadian John Wing has been a stand-up comedian for over fifteen years, blazing a comedic trail through the Canadian provinces, the United States, and several Caribbean island nations. He has made more than 100 television appearances, regular appearances at the Montreal Just for Laughs Comedy Festival, and two one-hour specials on The Comedy Network. John is also an accomplished writer, with three collections of poetry, A Cup of Nevermind, And The Fear Makes Us Special, and None of This is Probably True.

The American Gold Band
The American Gold Band is comprised of four highly seasoned musicians. Bill Cormier, lead guitar and vocals, and also serves as leader and musical conductor. Joe Manchego, bass guitar and vocals, has been with Bill for 14 years. Karl Carrasco, keyboards and vocals, has played with some of the biggest Latino acts in the country. Jack Cook plays drums and percussion, and when there is a need for horns on the gig, the band calls on veteran saxophonist John Burrola.

Tickets for this performance are priced at $75, $65, $35 and $25. Tickets for residents of Rancho Mirage (with ID) are $70, $60, $30 and $20. Tickets are available at the Theatre's website at www.mccallumtheatre.com or by calling the McCallum Theatre Box Office at (760) 340-2787.
