Interview: NIC & DESI - BROADWAY TO HOLLYWOOD at Oscars Palm Springs

A pair of Superheroes in Love will bring their quadruple threat talents to Oscars Palm Springs for one night only May 11th at 7PM (Dinner and Drink service begins at 5:30pm).  Nicolas Dromard and Desiree Davar, Winners of 2023 BroadwayWorld NYC Cabaret Awards as Best Duo, bring their high octane show to the Coachella Valley for the first time. Each bring an impressive résumé of Broadway and theatrical credits, including Wicked, Jersey Boys, Mary Poppins, and West Side Story, this dynamic duo invites audiences to an intimate showcase of their talents, their love, and their stories.  For many years, they have been performing their cabaret shows at such luminary venues as 54 Below, Feinstein’s San Francisco and Los Angeles, The Green Room 42, The Bourbon Room Hollywood and Birdland Jazz Club as well as other venues across the country. Recent transplants to the west coast, they have fallen in love (as indeed most people do) with Palm Springs. Recently the real-life couple sat down for an interview and discussed about life, love and all things performance.

Q: How did you and Desi first meet as performance partners?

A: Nicolas - We met while performing in the musical White Christmas in Denver Colorado. I played the role of Phil Davis, and Desi was the Cigarette Girl. Our eyes locked, I bought the most expensive cigar and completely forgot about Judy Haynes…. All jokes aside, we became friends during that contract, and six months after the show ended, I was fresh out of a relationship and Desi sent me a message asking how I was and we met for coffee and the rest is history….

Q: What has been the history of this cabaret show?

A: Desiree - Back in 2015, we created our show at Transcendence Theatre Company in Sonoma, California. They had an artist series and Nic and I created a show telling our story through various Broadway and pop songs, highlighting roles we’ve played.

Nicolas - The show has changed and evolved over the last 9 years, now including segments about our daughter and my recent battle with cancer.

Q: What do you consider your best strengths as performers?

A: Desiree - Nic and I are quadruple threats: we sing, dance, act and are parents! One thing we adore doing and that makes us stand out from the crowd is that we always incorporate dancing in our shows, no matter the size of the stage. So, one second I will be belting my face off in my Chita Rivera homage song All That Jazz, and then next we are tap dancing on our tap boards doing a duet of Puttin’ on the Ritz. I also become (and pay homage) to the fabulous Liza Minelli… Nic adores it and says "Her loving impersonation is second to none."

Q: What are your future plans/booking for this production after Palm Springs?

A: Nicolas - We have absolutely fallen in love with Palm Springs and would love to have a residency here! We also love teaching young aspiring performers and doing community outreaches! So, we would love to get involved with theatres in the community to choreograph, direct, perform and teach. As of right now we have a pretty light summer, I’m actually going to be playing Tommy DeVito in Jersey Boys in Sacramento in August, but once the fall comes, we have several bookings on the east and west coast, and it’s getting busier and busier, but we’ll come back to Palm Springs and do our show as much as we can!

Q: What should audiences expect at your show?

A: Desiree- They should expect to be entertained and be taken on a journey that commemorates love and dance! Our show celebrates the golden age of musical theatre and classic songs from the silver screen. We sing, we dance, we have a great time, and we want the audience to just sit back, enjoy themselves and come on the journey with us.

Nicolas- We will sing, we will dance, we will have some funny banter (mostly Desi making fun of me) and we will also pull at some heart strings.
