The Colburn School continues its 2017-2018 season with diverse performances that bring together today's most renowned artists with extraordinary Colburn School faculty and students in programs on campus and throughout the community.

On February 3, Thierry Fischer, Music Director of the Utah Symphony Orchestra, returns to the Ambassador Auditorium to lead the Colburn Orchestra in a wide-ranging program of Romantic-era favorites, including Saint-Saëns's iconic Danse Macabre, Berlioz's "Queen Mab" Scherzo from Romeo and Juliet, and Mendelssohn's whimsical overture to A Midsummer Night's Dream. Violinist and Conservatory of Music student Hao Zhou performs Dutilleux's L'arbre des songes, the composer's 1985 meditation on growth and form. As a member of the Viano Quartet, Zhou won third place in the Osaka International Chamber Music Competition in May 2017.

On February 8, as part of Colburn School's monthly series at the Steinway Piano Gallery in Beverly Hills featuring pianists from the studio of Fabio Bidini, Conservatory of Music student Yanfeng Bai performs a program of Bach, Liszt, Stravinsky and more. Bai is an international prizewinner, most recently taking first prize at both the China Shenzhen International Piano Concerto Competition and the Concerto Competition of the Morningside Music Bridge International Music Festival in 2017. He was also awarded first prize in the China Central Television Piano Competition and was a prizewinner of the International Tchaikovsky Competition for Young Musicians. Bai has performed with numerous orchestras, including Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra, China Philharmonic Orchestra, and the New Russia State Symphony Orchestra.

February 11 is a very busy day for Colburn School students. The Colburn Chamber Orchestra, led by Maxim Eshkenazy, gives a free performance at Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) as part of the Sundays Live concert series. Begun in 1948, Sundays Live is the longest running live music broadcast in Los Angeles. Fifty Sundays of the year, professional and emerging musicians perform for one hour on the stage of the Leo S. Bing Theater at LACMA. These free programs are streamed live at lacma.org and heard through the week as a podcast on kusc.org. The Colburn School's Community School of Performing Arts has participated regularly in this concert series for decades.

Also on February 11, at the Colburn School's downtown campus, clarinetist Andrew Marriner makes his debut appearance at the intimate Zipper Hall. Marriner, principal clarinet in the London Symphony Orchestra since 1986, has maintained a presence on the worldwide solo concert scene, in the field of chamber music, and as a teacher. Highlights of his career include many performances over the years with his father, Sir Neville Marriner, both as soloist and as a member of the Academy of St Martin in the Fields. Marriner will perform Brahms's Clarinet Quintet, one of the composer's final works, and one of the greatest chamber music masterpieces ever composed. The program also includes Strauss's Serenade in E-flat Major, Op.7, and Dvo?ák's Serenade for Woodwinds, Op. 44.

At the bandstand on Paseo de la Plaza near Olvera Street, the Colburn School Double Bass Ensemble will perform at Craft in America: THE CONCERT, an all-day music event celebrating 10 years of the Peabody Award--winning PBS documentary series Craft in America. The concert will feature artists and musical groups featured in recent Craft in America episodes along with a variety of Los Angeles musicians from an eclectic array of backgrounds: classical, folk, jazz and alternative rock. Craft in America: THE CONCERT is presented in conjunction with the Craft in America exhibition, Borders and Neighbors: Craft Connectivity Between the U.S. and Mexico at the nearby Biscailuz Gallery, inspired by the Getty's Pacific Standard Time: LA/LA initiative. THE CONCERT is also a celebration of downtown Los Angeles, the historic El Pueblo de Los Angeles Historical Monument, and the citywide cultural exchange that continues to build community.
