Three couples at different stages of life wrestle with the joys and pangs of love in 1930s Harlem, based on the music of Harlem Renaissance composer J. C. Johnson. George, a retired railroad porter and church deacon, keeps life neat and tidy until he meets his match in more ways than one when he befriends a down-and-out stranger who is secretly the sweetheart he had left behind in New Orleans 40 years before.
