The feelings that one gets when sitting in the audience for a musical production can run the gamut from sadness and heartbreak to joy and excitement. But it is a rare experience when a production causes one to experience the full breadth of human emotion – becoming transfixed and transported to an elevated state of bliss. This is what I experienced last night at Central Florida Vocal Arts (CFVA) production of Adam Guettel’s THE LIGHT IN THE PIAZZA – an stunningly brilliant production featuring some of the most magnificent vocals I have heard from the stage in a very long time.

Today, almost 50 years later, this musical still has the power to thrill, to excite, and yes, even to heal. And on stage at Theatre South Playhouse in Dr. Phillips, ANNIE feels fresh, fun, and fantastic – and demonstrates why this timeless tale of one little girl’s power to change the world with a little thing called hope is more relevant, today, than ever.

Community Stages in Ocala, FL announced an adult improv workshop led by Amy Beshears. The two-part class, held on November 3 and 10, will cover improvisation basics and enhance communication skills.

The show works because it forces us to identify with these well-meaning Mormon kids, which has the double effect of indicting our own sense of cultural supremacy while also softening the slurs toward its Latter-Day Saints.
