A VOTE: A VOICE, a stage play written by Florida Senator Geraldine F. Thompson, shines light on the struggle for voting rights in the Orlando area. Today, protests have erupted throughout America regarding police actions in minority communities. Similarly, during the 1950s and 60s, efforts to deny voting rights to African Americans sparked activism throughout the United States-including Central Florida. The riveting stories of legal cases handled by Paul C. Perkins, Sr., the sacrifices of July Perry in Ocoee, Harry T. Moore in Mims and other Central Florida voting rights activists are told through theatrical performances, song, music and dance. A VOTE: A VOICE, directed by Anthony Major, Associate Professor of Film and Africana Studies at the University of Central Florida, expands the body of knowledge available regarding the civil rights struggle in Florida. A VOTE: A VOICE commemorates the 50th Anniversary of the 1965 Voting Rights Act.
A VOTE: A Voice is presented by the Association to Preserve African American Society, History, and Tradition, Inc. (PAST, Inc.) and co-sponsored by Gilchrist Enterprises. Additional corporate sponsors of this event include the Orlando Magic, Epoch Properties, Wyndham Worldwide, Orlando Health, Bright House Networks, and Ready, Inc.
