The Annie Russell Theatre at Rollins College closes its 84th season with Urinetown, The Musical. This irreverent winter of three Tony awards is set in a futuristic but not-so-unrecognizable society in which water is scarce and private facilities are banned. Residents must pay a fee to a price-gouging megacorporation each time they use the bathroom. Poking fun at corporate greed, bureaucracy, and Broadway musicals, this satire tells the story of revolution incited by one hero who decides it's not "a privilege to pee." BroadwayWorld has a sneak peek at the stars in costume below!
In the Rollins' production, the time and place is deliberately unclear. "We've woven in elements of many different time periods," says Director Missy Barnes. "We're also really emphasizing the differences between the rich and the poor. It's an element of the show that feels even more relevant than when it was written twenty years ago." Student Costume Designer Haley Benson '17 elaborates, "A lot of the costumes for 'the poor' are from our stock - reshaped, dyed, tattered, and torn. I wanted to make everyone look like they had the same clothes they owned 20+ years ago but they keep having to make them work."
Urinetown, The Musical, with music and lyrics by Mark Hollman and book and lyrics by Greg Kotis, opens on April 21st and runs through April 29th. Tickets are $20, with discounts available for students, and seniors. A ticket to opening night includes admission to a reception immediately following the show - butlered champagne service, live music, and hors devours from sponsor Rogue Pub.
