It's here! The week that Orlando theater aficionados know and love. Here is your chance to see shows old, new, and experimental. This year Fringe is bigger with a new venue (black) and more shows than previous years. The Orlando International Fringe Festival returns May 13 - May 25, 2015.
Here are BroadwayWorld Orlando Editor, Matt Tamanini's top picks:
Play: The Republic
Part game, part theatre, The Republic is attempting to blur the lines between video games and immersive theatre. This "show" is interactive with the audience member or players determining the outcome. While The Republic will debut at Fringe, it actually will have an 11-week run following Fringe. This is sure to be an interesting experience. For tickets to the Fringe performances visit here.
Comedy: Anne Frankenstein
Anne Frank is already one of the most beloved figures in history, but what if Quentin Tarantino made a grindhouse movie where she came back to life to fight Nazis? This show claims to be shocking. Tickets here.
Musical: The Rap Guide to Religion
A hit in New York City, Baba Brinkman uses rap to discuss one of our culture's most taboo topics, religion. This looks entertaining as it combines hip-hop with stand up comedy. Show dates and tickets here.
My (Kimberly Moy) top Fringe picks:
I also select The Republic for my play/something different pick. I love different and I think that this show, which seems more than a show will knock it out of the park. The story is inspired by Greek Mythology and will break new boundaries. More info at http://www.therepublicgame.com/
Adult content: THE LION QUEEN: And the Naked Go-Go Cub
This show is marketed as the "Biggest Selling Orlando Fringe Hit of All Time." This year the show will feature Original sound alike compositions. It is a parody of Disney's film that mixes the birth of the gay-rights movement and death of Judy Garland. Definitely will have Adult Content. Tickets and show times here.
Magic: Nick Paul: Impossible Feats of Fake Magic
I saw this guy at Fringe Preview he was funny and astonishing. Nick Paul's magic seems simple, but then you bring in the element of audience participation and wonder how on earth does he do that. Tickets and show times here.
Musical: Jaws: The Movie: The Musical
Ever since JAWS closed at Universal Studios, I've felt a hole in my soul. I'm hoping that this musical will fill that hole. I mean their tag line is "We're gonna be a bigger stage." I love it. Check it out!
Shameless plug: Matt and I are working on a show called SHADOWS & LIGHT with 2nd Sight Dance Company. It is a show that combines contemporary dance with the art of illusion. My favorite number involves a very cool light effect, which if you saw the Fringe preview, is only the beginning. It's dance, it's magic. For dates and tickets click here.
