The Garden Theatre hosts the world premiere of CHRISTMAS BY COMMITTEE, written by Orlando's own Rob Winn Anderson. The show features an original plot and brand new music. CHRISTMAS BY COMMITTEE is a great start to the holiday season and a wonderful way to support a growing Orlando theater community.
In the small town of Citrus Valley, a committee is formed to put on the annual Christmas pageant show. The group is a bunch of misfits ranging from unmotivated teen to old Catholic lady; a middle-aged diva to a wannabe city councilman. Facing declines in attendance over the past few years, the Christmas Committee receives a new leader - Amy, the Christmas Cowboy. Amy must wrangle all the different perspectives and create a show that brings back the town's enthusiasm for the holidays.
CHRISTMAS BY COMMITTEE perfectly captures the essence of a small town and the different personalities that are found while working with a group of misfits. Of course in any small town, everybody knows each other's business. The relationship between the characters is outwardly complex, yet charmingly simple. The plot revolves around their personalities and celebrates each person's differences that contributes towards the greater goal. Overall the story is easy to follow and the cheery songs help move the plot along.
It is a musical with all original content, which is nearly unheard of coming out of a small theater scene like Orlando. The production uses live musicians, which is always appreciated. While you won't find any traditional holiday songs, there are a few catchy tunes that I could see going mainstream. Pay attention to: "The Scrooge Maneuver" and "Menorah! Menorah! Menorah!" These are the big song and dance numbers in Act I. The main character, Amy, has some nice ballads too like "Secret Santa" and "Christmas Isn't Snow."
Amy, played by Shelby Griswold, is a youthful optimistic lady who aims to please her uncle, the town mayor, by becoming the new leader of the committee. I was surprised to learn that Griswold is only a high school junior. Griswold is a fine actress and has a promising soprano voice. The rest of the cast is well suited for their roles and is well rehearsed in both dance and comedic timing. There are some good harmonies and group dance numbers.
I am always a fan of Rob Anderson's choreography. It's a traditional musical theater style and entertaining. There is also a great tap number to look forward to in Act II done by CK Anderson. The set is bright and cheerful and not outwardly holiday because the show takes place before Christmas. It is the choreography that fills the minimalist stage.
If you love new plays, or love holiday shows then do not miss CHRISTMAS BY COMMITTEE plays at the Garden Theatre now through December 21st on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. For tickets and more information visit www.gardentheatre.org.
