The Producers, running May 27 - June 26, 2016 in the Hawks Mainstage Theatre at the Omaha Community Playhouse, is the hilarious, lively and absurd Mel Brooks comedy that follows producers Max Bialystock and Leo Bloom on their quest to become filthy rich. They have created a perfect plan and a Broadway scam-produce a complete theatrical failure with a terrible script and the worst director in town. Packed full of dancing Nazis, storm troopers and showgirls, their musical Springtime for Hitler is a sure bet to bomb. Now they just need to sit back and let the dough roll in...

The premise of this show is to create an absurd and offensive musical, so there are light-hearted moments that are purposely offensive including the aforementioned dancing Nazis.

The Producers musical is adapted by Mel Brooks and Thomas Meehan from Brooks' 1968 film of the same name. The stage musical was on Broadway from 2001 to 2007, starring Nathan Lane as Max Bialystock and Matthew Broderick as Leo Bloom, who also starred in their respective roles in the 2005 film musical version.

In 2001, The Producers was nominated for 15 Tony Awards and won 12, including Best Musical, Best Original Score (Mel Brooks), Best Book of a Musical (Mel Brooks), Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Musical (Nathan Lane, who beat Matthew Broderick), Best Direction of a Musical and Best Choreography (Susan Strohman). The show is one of few musicals to win in every category in which it was nominated. With 15 nominations, The Producers held the record for most Tony nominations in history, which was tied by Billy Elliot in 2009. That record was broken this year when the smash-hit Hamilton received 16 Tony nominations.
