Omaha Performing Arts will present Ruthie Foster at the 1200 Club in the Holland Performing Arts Center's Scott RecitAl Hall on Saturday, March 6, 2010 at 8:00 p.m.
Hailed as a "Blues Powerhouse" by ‘"O" Magazine," Ruthie Foster's voice is gorgeous, whether she's belting out a little blues, funk, soul or jazz. Foster knew at a very young age that her life would evolve around music. As a child, Foster was always taking in a wide variety of music, whether through the hymns her mother taught her, the Beatles songs she analyzed in a book given by her guitar teacher, the 45s her truck-driving uncle would drop off during his visits, the old-school country she heard while watching various country variety shows with her grandfather, or the pop songs that crackled through the family radio.
After moving to Waco to attend McClennan Community College, she mixed classes in music and audio engineering with visits to clubs at night. After a stint in the Navy, Foster's path led to New York, where it became apparent that she wasn't destined to be a mainstream power-ballad singer. So Foster returned to her roots in Texas and has since progressed through five albums and a steady regimen of hard work, whether fronting a full band or working solo.Foster's latest release is "The Truth According to Ruthie Foster" (2009).
Now in its fourth season, the 1200 CLUB transforms the Holland Performing Arts Center's most intimate venue, the Suzanne and Walter Scott RecitAl Hall, into a relaxed lounge where patrons can experience performances by national and internationally known artists in folk, jazz, blues, world music and comedy. While enjoying the evening's entertainment, audience members may order hors d'oeuvres and cocktails served right to their table.
Tickets for Ruthie Foster are $25 in advance and $30 the day of the show. Tickets to all performances in the 1200 CLUB are on sale now and may be purchased through Ticket Omaha by phone at (402) 345-0606, online at TicketOmaha.com or at the Ticket Omaha Box Office inside the Holland Performing Arts Center at 13th and Douglas streets.
