CITY OF ANGELS, running March 4 - April 3, 2016, in the Hawks Mainstage Theatre at the Omaha Community Playhouse, is a film noir-style musical that pays homage to glamorous 1940s Hollywood. Winner of six Tony Awards, including Best Musical, this clever show has two plots running simultaneously (the real world and the "reel" world) as a man writes a screenplay that mirrors his own life. Intrigue, mystery and incredible music make CITY OF ANGELS a must-see production. BroadwayWorld has a sneak peek at the cast in costume below!
This show tells two stories simultaneously; the story of Stine, the screenwriter who is creating a screenplay for a movie titled CITY OF ANGELS, and the story of the movie, which involves private detectives, murders, love triangles and intrigue. With the unique challenge of portraying the film noir-style movie on stage, that storyline is set in black and white. To help create the black and white feeling, the sets, costumes and even the lighting make it seem monochromatic.
CITY OF ANGELS received critical acclaim, winning several awards including the Tony Award for Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical and Best Original Score in 1990. It also won several Drama Desk Awards, including Outstanding Musical and Outstanding Book of a Musical, in that same year. Music was written by Cy Coleman, featuring jazz and big band music that invokes the feeling of the 1940s. Lyrics by David Zippel and the book is by Larry Gelbart, who was the creator and producer of the hit TV series "M*A*S*H."
