OCU to Present Spring Awakening Livestream April 23-24Oklahoma City Universitys Wanda L. Bass School of Music will present the Tony-Award winning rock-infused musical Spring Awakening on April 23-24 as the finale to its 69th consecutive season of opera and music theater. Two double-cast performances will be live-streamed 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday from OCUs Kirkpatrick stage. The musical will follow COVID-10 safety protocols, including masks and distancing. The show is rated PG-13 for mature themes and strong language."Although based on a play written 130 years ago, Spring Awakening reveals that not much has changed for adolescents struggling to understand their bodies and their desires, said director Karen Coe Miller. The show's eclectic rock score leads us through the characters inner landscape, with everything from ballads of longing to punk explosions of frustration and defiance.The musical is based on the German play of the same name. Frank Wedekinds work was inspired by incidents in his life and those of his friends, and punished in 1891 when the author was 27. Spring Awakening follows a group of 19th century German teenagers as they navigate self-discovery in a conservative, sexually repressed world. The musical featuring a book and lyrics by Steven Sater and music by Duncan Sheik swept the 2007 Tony Awards winning eight of its 11 nominations, including Best Musical, Best Book and Best Score.The OCU creative team includes Kare Coe Miller, director; Matthew Mailman, music director; Sheri Hayden, choreographer; Jason Foreman, scenic and digital media design; Landry Strickland, lighting design; and Erin Wilson, costume design.THE COMPANYOCUs Oklahoma Opera and Music Theater Company, the nations longest-running collegiate-based opera and music theater troupe, has been honored with nine National Opera Association Production Awards in nine years, including seven in the past four seasons. The school was named to Playbill's 2018-19 and 2019-20 Big Ten lists of Top 10 collegiate training grounds for Broadway performers.
