Lyric Theatre and Devon Energy have again partnered to bring interactive, musical theatre into classrooms across the state in a unique program that combines art, history, and entertainment. Devon has supported Lyric's statewide arts outreach program since 2007.
Lyric's current production, 1776 Interactive: A Musical Celebration of America's Independence, debuted in Oklahoma schools last year and was presented to 28,000 students in 74 schools across the state. The program was so popular it was selected to tour again this year. Thirty-nine schools throughout Oklahoma City's metro area, Tulsa and the far corners of the state already have been scheduled, with more shows being added daily.Written in Oklahoma and performed by professional Oklahoma actors, Lyric's 1776 tells the story of the birth of the Declaration of Independence, using songs and scenes from the classic stage musical, 1776. Students learn about the history of the musical, the life of the musical writers, and the meaning behind the historical-based songs performed."We are excited to partner with Lyric Theatre once again to bring performing arts into Oklahoma public schools," said Larry Nichols, Devon's executive chairman. "This program exposes students to Oklahoma's rich artistic community and this interactive musical is an exciting and creative approach to educate students about an important milestone in American history."
Developed by Lyric's ThElma Gaylord Academy Administrator Robert Matson, the program was designed to appeal to elementary through high school students. Each student attending the performance receives a colorful study guide filled with fun facts, puzzles, and historical information about the Declaration of Independence. The guide also includes classroom activities, and teachers can find additional educational materials on Lyric's website. The program allows students to interact with historical figures such as Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson and John Adams. Students can become a member of "Congress" and have an opportunity to join actors on stage and waltz with Mrs. Jefferson. After the program, a talkback session gives students a chance to ask additional questions about the musical, the actors' backgrounds, or how to embark on a career in musical theatre.1776 Interactive: A Musical Celebration of America's Independence is directed by Lyric's Associate Artistic Director Ashley Wells. Performed by eight professional Oklahoma actors, the cast alternates performances to accommodate their rigorous schedule.
In addition to Devon, this project is made possible by Boeing, Allied Arts Educational Outreach Program, Wilshire Charitable Foundation, Oklahoma Arts Council and The Kirkpatrick Foundation.
