Adam Overett's new musical The Double-Threat Trio gets first full workshop presentation with the University of Oklahoma Weitzenhoffer School of Musical Theatre at Norman's historic Sooner Theatre on Saturday, September 24th at 11am. Admission is free.
Everyone knows that to make it in musical theatre, you have to be a triple-threat: to act, sing and dance like a pro. Jamison Bartlett Hackingford, a Method actor who can't dance; Kenny LaComb, a versatile dancer who can't sing; and Nina Kowalski, a legit and pop singer who can't act, join forces to create a show that highlights each of their respective fortes and conceals their lack of breadth. Enter Millicent Masterson, an eccentric writer-director-producer-designer-choreographer-stage manager who has been waiting to vault her once-storied career back onto the big stage with her three-character musical adaptation of Oedipus Rex. Comedic mayhem ensues when this quartet begins their quest toward opening night.
The Double-Threat Trio is a musical comedy farce with a cast of four and an orchestra of one. The show combines the struggling showbiz types of Noises Off and the aspiring everyday characters of The Full Monty with a musical score ranging in style from classic Broadway to jukebox pop. The cast of undergraduate musical theatre majors includes Patrick Nowak as Jamison, Taylor Bryant as Nina, Daryl Tofa as Kenny and Ashley Mandanas as Millicent. Direction and choreography is by Lyn Cramer with music direction by Paul Christman.
Adam Overett is a graduate of Yale University and a New York City-based musical theater writer whose works include My Life Is A Musical (Bay Street Theatre world premiere 2014; "Inspired" - NY Times); Popesical (NYC Fringe Festival 2015, Overall Excellence Award; Lyric Theatre, LA); Call It Courage (Bingham Camp Theatre Retreat 2015; Zach Theatre, Austin TX 2010; five Payne Award nominations); co-writer/composer of We The People: America Rocks (2011 Lortel nominee, Best Off-Broadway Musical); "My Sky" (performed by Stephanie J. Block on the No More Revivals album).
