XAVIER SMITH’S LADIES OF SOUL TRIBUTE returns for it’s eleventh anniversary on Thursday, February 15 @ 9:30pm at NYC's JOE'S PUB (425 Lafayette Street, NYC):
Celebrate the upcoming Valentine's Day in style with the much-anticipated tenth annual LADIES OF SOUL TRIBUTE, headlined by the talented Xavier Smith and a stellar lineup of special guests. This year’s guest performers include Nicholas Ryan Gant (Mariah Carey, Jon Batiste) and Jo Lampert (David Bryne, Phish).
As the New Year's festivities fade away, this event promises a unique blend of class, humor, and a deep admiration for the inspirational women who have left an indelible mark.
What began as a simple cover song has evolved into a cherished tradition under Xavier's direction. Initially, an annual free recording accompanied by meticulously re-created, with Xavier morphing into each female artist, gained popularity among friends. The love for these covers ignited a tradition that unites friends, musicians, and fans annually to revel in the magic of these timeless songs.
Emblazoned by an homage to Aaliyah’s iconic 2001 album cover, this year's edition promises to be an unforgettable celebration. The show consistently sells out in advance at NYC's JOE'S PUB, a testament to its widespread appeal. Xavier reflects on the evolution of the show, stating, "The seed for my Ladies of SoulTribute sprouted from recording an annual Valentine's Day cover for fans. Transforming it into a full-fledged show was a natural progression. The Tribute show is, in many ways my love letter to extraordinary Black female musical artists who’ve profoundly influenced me." Join us for an evening filled with love, music, and soooooul!
Previous guest performers have included Tony Award winner Lena Hall, The Rapture’s Luke Jenner, Stephin Merritt of the Magnetic Fields, Bright Light Bright Light, Broadway’s Cassondra James and Anastacia McCleskey, Joan As Police Woman, soul funktress Adi Oasis, Rizo, Del Marquis of Scissor Sisters, Lake Street Dive’s Rachael Price, and Grammy-nominated singer Mykal Kilgore.
Xavier Smith himself is a highly-regarded artist in his own right, getting his start in the famed The Boys Choir of Harlem and has received uncoerced praise for his vocal skills from some of the biggest names in the business, including Madonna, D’Angelo, Erykah Badu, Mary J. Blige, Devo, Anita Baker, Lena Horne, and Ashford & Simpson.
Recently, he starred in Ivo Dimchev’s spellbinding production of In Hell With Jesus/Top 40 at La Mama and collaborated with Grammy-winning songwriter/producer Luke Solomon (Beyonce “Renaissance”) co-writing and contributing lead vocals on Horse Meat Disco’s debut album Love & Dancing. He also co-produced a remix for daytime disco band Poolside’s single “Around The Sun” with Body Music, featuring Xavier’s lead vocals.
