Carrying forward the theme of Crossing Borders, each of the pieces on this program evokes a story of travel: escape, emigration, education and employment abroad, eternal farewell. The works of a young generation of Ukrainian composers are paired with established voices from Ukraine, including the country’s most famous living composer and two of contemporary music’s leading figures.
Highlights include the world premiere of Mykhailo Chedryk’s ‘Sonare’ for double bass and ensemble; vocal music by Valentyn Sylvestrov; Steve Reich’s iconic work ‘Different Trains’, performed by The Rhythm Method; and a set of songs by Ukraine’s first woman composer, Stefania Turkevych. North American premieres include Marian Fil’s ‘Devaldi Korbes’ and a clarinet duet by Ksenia Stetsenko.
The DiMenna Center for Classical Music is at 450 West 37th Street, New York, NY.
