New Camerata Opera presents Triskaidekaphilia, an operatic exploration of the occult, featuring Menotti’s The Medium and a Cabaret macabre at Brooklyn’s illustrious House of Yes. The evening will delve into the darkest depths of humanity, in a way that only opera can. It will highlight the operatic voices of New Camerata Opera, the aerial expertise of Roxie Valdez, and the instrumental virtuosity of The Curiosity Cabinet. Mezzo-soprano Caroline Tye reprises the title role in The Medium, for which she has been hailed as the “true embodiment of the role” (OperaTeen).
After the failure of his previous opera, Menotti turned away from the stage for a few years. But on a Guggenheim fellowship in 1946 he wrote what became his most successful work, The Medium. It set a precedent in the history of American opera by running on Broadway, coupled with a short curtain raiser, The Telephone.
The second act of the evening invites the audience to attend a cabaret macabre. Pieces that haunt and horrify - "Die Erlkönig", "Danse macabre" and "Youkali" - will delight audiences as they take in a spectacle of song as never seen before.
