SHE SINGS ME HOME is about a young Black trans woman named MONIKA and a young Black cis woman named LILIANA who slowly fall in love in an under-21 mental ward while passing notes, creating alliances and friendships, and risking their safety in the process. Disaster strikes and worlds are rocked when secrets are put to the light. The music is within the Black musical canon, and it includes R&B, rock, blues, gospel, and pop music.
CW: intergenerational trauma, interpersonal and structural violence and -isms (like racism, sexism, transphobia, homophobia, and ableism), and the need for a better system than the one we have in America.
Writer/Director/Producer:
Artemis Montague is a Black mixed nonbinary composer-lyricist-librettist-singer with co-occurring disabilities. They recently released a song called "could you (i'm yours)" in December 2024. Montague was a finalist for the 2022 Write Out Loud Contest for their song, “friend”, received an Audiofemme Agenda Grant in May 2023 to record an EP of original music, and was honored with a National Disability Theatre Grant in 2023. They were a participating Lyricist in the BMI Lehman Engel Musical Theatre Workshop as well. SHE SINGS ME HOME, their first full-length Black-, trans-, and queer-led musical, has been performed at the REACH at the Kennedy Center as part of the Page to Stage Festival with Ally Theatre Company; the Green Room 42 in NYC as a concert in February 2023, and at Round House Theatre in Bethesda, MD as part of the 2nd Annual National Capital New Play Festival's workshops, and was presented at Broadway Shark Tank in October 2023. In the summer of 2024, the show won a Map Fund Grant to do a developmental reading of the musical. In general, Montague has 2 in-progress musicals (HOW BABY AND THE ANCESTORS ATTEMPTED A REVOLUTION and RHAPSODY IN SUNFLOWER YELLOW); 160+ songs and two in-progress film scripts. Montague is also the IIDEAA Board chair for TEMPO (Trans Expansive Music Professional Organization) and a NYCLU Artist Ambassador. They are currently seeking representation.
