Sister Girl
By
Prudence Wright Holmes
Based on the true story of college-educated freed slave, Mary Jane Richards, who was a spy in Jefferson Davis’s White House in the Civil War. Pretending to be a half-wit slave girl who couldn’t read or write, Richards stole secret documents which were smuggled to the North for four years. At the end of the war, when Davis was fleeing Richmond dressed as a woman, Richards set fire to his White House, ran off into the night and was never heard of again. This play celebrates the historic actions of this unsung heroine.
