RIOULT Dance NY presents a preview of Pascal Rioult’s new work inspired by the 1970’s progressive rock music of his youth, alongside repertory favorites "Duets Sacred & Profane" and "Dream Suite." The performance will be followed by a wine and cheese reception with Pascal Rioult and the company dancers.
This new work in progress, to premiere at The Joyce Theater May 31-June 4, is a clear break from Rioult’s fascination with classical scores. Rioult was inspired by progressive rock musicians’ experimentation with compositional structure—often borrowing techniques from classical music in lieu of the danceable, predictable beat which pervaded the era. Revisiting the music 40 years later for the concert stage, the orchestral sound and long melodic lines found in 1970’s progressive rock appeal to Mr. Rioult’s classical sensibility.
