Only two audience members can participate in each performance; only 72 people can see a showing each night of performances. This entirely unique style of theatre, seen nowhere else in the world, was created by Taurie Kinoshita many years ago and performed in site-specific venues. Now, Honolulu audiences will once again have the chance to experience this theatrical formatbut online, in the comfort of their homes. Each of the 12 storylines are different, but they all deal peripherally with the popular, cult-classic theme of zombies. All donations go directly to student programs and can be made here https://giving.uhfoundation.org/funds/12677904Director Kinoshita says, I wanted to do something topical, but not too hard-on-the-nose, and zombies are great fun. In cinema and literature, zombie invasions reflect countless profound metaphors: from brute survivalism to the selflessness paramount for civilization, mindless consumerism to existential authenticity, a symbol of modern life or the destructiveness of prejudice and rage. In our show, each storyline with each actor focuses on a different themewhatever was most important to the individual actor. Kinoshita also seeks to address the core difference between theatre and live television. Theatre, at its most basic, requires a connection with the audiencelive streaming a performance online is more like television than theatre. In theatre, the actor must respond to the audiences energywhether holding for laughs or picking up the pace. As theatre theorist Jerzy Grotowski said, theatre can exist without costumes, without a set, without a textbut not without an actor and a spectator, theatre then is what takes place between actor and spectator. As safety is a supreme concern right now, Protocol Z seeks to convey a truly theatrical experience to a limited audience. Performances are shortno more than 40 minutes, as staring at screen for longer than an hour at a disembodied face can be challenging for even the most dedicated viewer. Most significantly, following on Kinoshitas revolutionary early work, audience members in Protocol Z can meet their actor and just listen and nodor they can change the entire storyline: the choice to passively watch the actor or play their own character is completely theirs! Those with an interest in zombies, apocalyptic science fiction scenarios, improvisation, politics or ethics, popular culture, or interactive immersive theatre should see this PG-13 show.
