Nyad’s Dream premieres at The Tank August 25th-27th. The play opens when Phoenix, a non-binary artist, nearly drowns and loses all their memories. Over the course of the play, through medicine and magic they discover they are not alive by accident.
Nyad’s Dream thematically resides at the intersection of queerness, identity, environmentalism, and magic. It poses the question of are we a collection of our pasts or are we part of the divine spark in the universe? Identity is further explored in casting, as all characters are textually queer and represent the ordinary grace of the rainbow family, it showcases there are many valid answers to the question of how to live.
As stage manager Grace Terdoslavich reflects, “Nyad's dream is a complex meditation on the interwoven nature of identity and environment… But Nyad's Dream goes beyond this mere fatalism, and follows the cycle through its natural conclusion: that harm is not an inherent part of the cycle, but an aberration introduced after the fact. Through love and care for our environment and our society, we can queer the cycle to heal both our surroundings and ourselves--but only if we have the inner strength to ask it of ourselves and each other.”
On the putting up the show, writer/producer, Juliann Lavallee cherishes, “I have felt so supported and seen by the community of artists that have come together to bring this to life. It has been goosebump inducing, artistically arresting, and faith restoring.”
Kristin Sgarro (an actor/producer and developmental collaborator) shares, “What I admire most about Juliann’s writing is that it is always looking ahead, with equal parts of both reality and hope, making necessary change feel that much more possible in this wide world of overwhelm. Trans and nonbinary folks don’t often get to think about their futures, and Juliann gives us that chance.”
