New York University's Skirball Center for the Performing Arts has revealed its 2013-14 lineup in musical theater, music, dance and more.
Kicking off the season in September is the musical Sweet Smell of Success from September 12-14, featuring music by Marvin Hamlisch, Lyrics by Craig Carnelia and Book by John Guare. Next up will be the "Masada Marathon" as part of the ZORN@60 Series. The concert will feature 12 musical groups performing works by John Zorn in celebration of the composer's 60th birthday. Closing out September will be KT Tunstall, The National Theatre Live's OTHELLO and "Bright Lights Shining Stars", a dance gala fundraiser for the NYC Dance Alliance Foundation, honoring Catherine Zeta-Jones and more.
October begins with the children's dance piece HAROLD AND THE PURPLE CRAYON, followed by Comedy Bang! Bang! Live! with host Scott Aukerman on October 12. SHOW OFF! launches on October 20 to celebrate 25 years of the National Alliance for Musical Theater's Festival of New Musicals. Gayle King and Suze Orman, a poets forum and "The Creative Time Summit" talks will take place in the latter half of the month, with October finally rounding out with The National Theatre Live's encore presentation of FRANKENSTEIN.
The National Theatre continues in November with "50 Years On Stage". Other November theatre shows include THE VERY HUNGRY CATERPILLAR and Jim Henson's DINOSAUR TRAIN - LIVE!, with comedian Maria Bamford appearing for the New York Comedy Festival.
The winter season welcomes Cirque Eloize's CIRKOPOLIS, with The National Theatre Live's CORIOLANUS set for February. Also in February are a presentation by Tao Dance Theater, Hangzhou Yue Opera Company's HEDDA and THE LADY FROM THE SEA, and a dance piece called PAST/FORWARD 2014: Women at Work.
The National Theatre of China's RICHARD III will mark the company's first visit to the United States in March. The Skirball Center will close out its 2014 lineup with Tan Dun's THE MAP in May, performed by the NYU Symphony Orchestra.
