Fed up with a culture that spends more energy warning girls how to avoid rape instead of teaching boys rape is always wrong, playwright Winter Miller created Rape Aid, an experiment in activism, theater and charity with an all-inclusive post-show dance party. For Rape Aid, a half dozen artists were commissioned to make short pieces (plays, monologues, songs, films) for an evening to incite dialogue on the subject of rape.

On December 17, 2013 from 7-9PM, Rape Aid will feature work from writers Jennifer Baumgardner (It Was Rape), Rebecca Hart (Rebecca Hart & The New Students), Marya Hornbacher (Wasted), Chisa Hutchinson (She Like Girls), Winter Miller (In Darfur), Danica Novgorodoff (Refresh, Refresh), Sylvan Oswald (Nightlands), and Heather Raffo (Nine Parts of Desire) to combat sexual violence.

Emcees Colleen Werthmann (Mr. Burns: A Post-Electric Play) and Russell G. Jones (Ruined) will be joined by an ensemble of actors. The pieces will run a little over an hour, followed by a dance party. Rape Aid is part of New Georges' Wintry Mix.

In the United States, nearly 1 in 2 women and 1 in 5 men experience sexual violence victimization in their lifetime, and 73% of sexual assaults are perpetrated by a non-stranger. Whether it's the boys of Steubenville, Ohio who rape and share evidence on social media or the frequent assault of men and women in the military, the way to prevent sexual violence is to broaden the dialogue.

Half of every ticket purchased benefits Safe Horizon, the largest victim services organization based in New York City. Tickets are $20 for general admission and can be purchased through the Rape Aid site: http://friendsdontletfriendsrape.wordpress.com/
