The streets are heating up in New York City as The Players Theatre Short Play and Musical Festival celebrates eight years of hot new plays that define it unique qualities. 15 writers from as far away as California participated in the festival of 15 minute slices of urban life. Each week a "Best of the Week" play was selected and awarded a $100 prize.
Week one's honor went to Susan Boggess, whose play "A Heart Scam" explored the very specific hurdles single New Yorkers (nearly half the city's population) face in order to date in this crazy yet fantastic city. (see related Broadway World article)
Walter Thinnes play "Take Wing" was the week two winner. It was a nostalgic tip of the gangster hat that takes place in 1950's Hell's Kitchen when Irish American gangs ran midtown west. A mob lieutenant dreams of leaving his past life behind and plans to take wing to escape his past. The production was directed by Pamela Wilson and the talented cast trio included: Carly Ruda as Doris, Eric Diamond as Malloy and Michael Giorgio as Benny
Week three's winner "When We Talk About Watermelons" was written by Morgan Christie who also directed the talented cast including Shaquille Nelson as The Man on the Ledge and Benjamin Bowman as the Security Guard. "When We Talk About Watermelon" was a short play layered in a deep dialogue about existentialism, love, prejudice, and a lot more. A short piece with enough resonance to quiet our thoughts, but also intrigue them.
The Short Play and Musical Festival (SPF) is presented three times a year. The October theme is horror and the February theme is SEX! Submissions are currently open for the horror festival - Boo!
