One tends to have a bucket list by the time they get into their 40's - but usually having sex for the first time is not one of the items. The week two winner of The Players Theatre Short Play Festival, V-Card, written and directed by Stacey Weingarten, explores this situation.
V-Card, one of five Sex-themed short plays of a three-week festival, deals with the often misunderstood subject of a woman who's older, hasn't "given it up", and why that's the case. "In pop culture these figures are usually given a shroud of being too much of something, whether religious, geeky, shy, ugly, or otherwise have some sort of 'issue" stated playwright Stacey Weingarten "I wondered what would happen if someone who was seemingly "normal" were forced to answer the question of 'why' they still have their 'v card' over and over and over... how sick of it they'd be, and how they might remedy the problem (by creating business cards to explain it)." The talented cast included: Leta Renée-Alan as Jill and Matthew August Jeffers as Jack.
The other four productions featured last week were: Matt and Susan and Greg and Julie by Walter Thinnes, The Eggshells by JC Hopkins, The Heart Wants by Danielle Fink and Belgium Has Fallen by Michael Long. They were selected for the festival from nearly 100 submissions.
The Players Theatre Short Play Festival and Be Bold! Productions encourage playwrights to push the boundaries of convention and explore our most basic instincts by producing something new and provocative for the annual Sex - themed festival each February. Celebrating its 7th year, "Sex!" runs thru February 25 with five more steamy plays to be presented this week. The Short Play and Musical Festival (SPF) is presented three times a year. The June theme is NYC and the October theme is horror.
The Festival runs through February 25th at The Players Theatre in the 3rd floor Steve and Marie Sgouros Black Box located at 115 MacDougal Street in the West Village. Performances are Thursday - Saturday at 7p and Sunday at 3p. Tickets are $30 and can be purchased online at: www.shortplaynyc.com or at the box office.
