One hundred and twenty years ago in the spring of 1888, The Atlantic Monthly first published Henry James' classic novella, The Asperan Papaers. It was released in book form later that same year. The subsequent "New York Edition" of The Asperan Papers, still in use today, was published in 1908. Now, 100 years later, Turtle Shell Productions presents the world premiere of a brand new adaptation of The Asperan Papers by Martin Zuckerman. One of James' personal favorites, The Asperan Papers is often compared with his better-known work, Washington Square, and is considered by many a masterpiece in its own right.
Set in Venice in the 1880s, the scholar enlists the help of a dowdy, middle-aged spinster in obtaining the love letters written to her shriveled-up aunt long ago. The scholar wants the papers; the niece wants him; the aunt wants his money. This odd triangle builds to a surprising and riveting denouement. The show will run May 2nd through May 24th, 2008, Monday at 7PM and Thursday through Saturday at 8PM at the Times Square Arts Center (300 W 43rd Street, New York, NY 10036).
