The award-winning Toy Box Theatre Company wraps up its 9th season with the world premiere of The Short Fall by David Caudle (author of The Sunken Living Room). Colonna Sonora, 2010 New York Innovative Theatre Awards nominee for outstanding original music, will provide live music as well as live sound design, and members of the critically acclaimed production teams of Toy Box's 2009 'Tis Pity She's a Whore and 2010's Woyzeck return to bring this multidisciplinary work to life. Performances will be at Teatro Iati, 64 E. 4th Street, New York, NY beginning June 3rd, 2011.
The Short Fall is a rollicking satire about America's current obsession with notoriety at any cost. Average housewife Tabby Fodder is horrified when her socially challenged family faces a fall from grace. It's not the fall that worries her, but the lack of vertical distance they're doomed to plummet. With wisdom gleaned from tabloids, she plots to raise her family to greater heights, so that when they fall, the world will hear the thud.
The Short Fall is Toy Box Theatre Company's 11th production, and it marks the second show in their transition to a two-show season. Toy Box's previous productions have received the 2005 "Excellence in Playwriting" award from The New York International Fringe Festival, as well as "Outstanding Original Music" from The New York Innovative Theatre Awards in 2007 and a second nomination in 2010 for the same category.
Playwright David Caudle is a member of the Dorothy Strelsin New American Writers Group at Primary Stages. His original play, The Sunken Living Room, won the Southern New Plays Festival, Ambie Award, Carbonell Finalist, "Gold Medal Finalist" for the Pinter Review Prize, Play of the Week at Drama Bookshop. It is published by Samuel French, with monologues reprinted in Best of Anthologies by Samuel French and Smith & Kraus.
Directed by Toy Box founder and co-artistic director David Michael Holmes, The Short Fall features Ron Bopst, Ryan Colwell, Kally Duling, Dori Legg, Ryan Reilly, and Karen Stanion. Set design by Gian Marco La Forte and Ana Popescu, lighting design by Jill Nagel, costume design by Kate Mincer, and original score and sound design by Colonna Sonora's Brady Bagger and James Sparber.
