Theater For The New City is set to present Bike Shop.

About the show: BIKE SHOP is the story of a Brooklyn bicycle store circa 1993 and its owner, Bobby, an exuberant bike mechanic who runs a shop that was first opened by her grandmother in 1936. Two years after a tragic bike accident, Bobby tries to get back on her bike and get her own life in gear. As the sole performer in this new musical about the passions that drive us, the choices we make, and the relationships that help to shape us along the way, Elizabeth Barkan brings to life three generations of this colorful, bike-obsessed family, as she builds and fixes real bicycles on the stage and is backed up by the 4-piece "Bicycle Band". Cyclists are encouraged to ride their bikes to the theater and park them on stage as a part of the show.

Barkan is a former bike shop owner in Fort Greene Brooklyn and a former bicycle messenger. She currently teaches Spinning classes at Crunch Fitness. Like the main character of the show she is a former United States Cycling Federation Bicycle racer.

Bike Shop will be Directed by Gretchen Cryer (I’m Getting My Act Together And Taking It On The Road) and will run for 10 performances from March 9th through March 18th at Theater For The New City a Pulitzer Prize winning cultural center that is known for its high artistic standards and widespread community service.

Bike Shop is directed by Gretchen Cryer with music direction by Gerry Dieffenbach, book by Elizabeth Barkan, lyrics by Caroline Murphy, music by Youn-Young Park and additional music by Gerry Dieffenbach.

Bike Shop runs March 9th-March 18th at Theater For The New City, 155 First Avenue (between 9th and 10th Streets). The performance schedule is as follows: Monday-Saturday at 8:00pm; Sundays at 3:00pm. Tickets are $15 for Monday-Saturday performances; Sundays are pay what you can.
