P.O.V. Artists announces the world premiere of Refrain, a new play by Melisa Tien starring Marc Santa Maria and Brooke Eddey. Refrain premieres at the Wild Project on Nov. 3rd with performances through Nov. 19th.
Written specifically for the actors, Refrain traces the relationship between Angela, played by Ms. Eddey, and Leo, played by Mr. Santa Maria, after they've struck a deal in which she'll carry his child in exchange for him sending her to art school, fulfilling a lifelong dream. The next nine months follows them through the trials and tribulations of pregnancy as their relationship evolves and they redefine the concept of family. The play touches on the increasingly popular choice of surrogacy and the sacrifices one makes in order to fulfill the dream of having a child. It also wrestles with the sacrifices one makes in order to pursue their dream career.
"It's been such an exciting process to collaborate with Melisa and Brooke to discover the theme of Refrain: letting go of, and redefining your dreams," says Santa Maria. "We can all relate to this inevitable and often scary feeling, and it's thrilling to bring it to life on stage."
Refrain's creative team includes playwright Melisa Tien and director Jessi Hill, both members of the current lab at the Women's Project, the nation's largest company dedicated to promoting and producing theater created by women. Santa Maria has been acting in NYC for over a decade, appearing in diverse projects ranging from The Karaoke Show to Three Sisters. Eddey moved to NYC after completing The Actors Studio Program at the National Institute of Dramatic Art in Sydney; her credits include Fallen, A New Theory of Vision, and Plucking Failures Like Ripe Fruit. Refrain features costume design by Emily DeAngelis, set design by Caite Hevner, lighting design by Chad LeFebvre, and sound design by Jeremy Mather.
Refrain runs from Nov. 3rd - Nov. 19th, at the Wild Project, 195 East 3rd St, New York, NY 10009, with performances Tuesdays through Saturdays at 8pm and Sundays at 3pm. Tickets can be purchased at Ovationtix for $25 or by calling (212) 352-3101. For more information visit www.refraintheplay.com.
