The play is the first production of TST 48th Season and is the first New York revival of the play since the Broadway run in 2011 which starred Chris Rock and Bobby Cannavale. Playwright Stephen Adly Guirgis won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 2015 for his play Between Riverside and Crazy and co-created the hit Netflix series The Get Down with Baz Luhrmann.
The Motherf**ker with the Hat is directed by TST Artistic Director Peter Jensen whose production of Balm in Gilead, won a 2011 New York Innovative Theatre Award for Outstanding Production of a Play. The comedy is being produced by TST Producing Director Halle Morse.
Jackie's life is on the verge of coming together. He was just released from jail, joined AA, and has a new sponsor helping him stay clean and sober. Then there's Veronica, his childhood sweetheart. When the smell of Aqua Velva, and a hat comes between them, sparks fly. Fast, furious and filled with sharp poetic dialogue and flawed, colorful, wounded characters, The Motherf**ker with the Hat crackles with truth, humor and a sense of hope. A dark comic tale about friendship, love, addiction, and the difficulties of adulthood in New York City.
The cast features Jill Bianchini (The Hot L Baltimore/T. Schreiber Theatre), Casey Braxton (The Barbecue/13th Street Repertory Theater), Omar Bustamante (The Last Days of Judas Iscariot/T. Schreiber Theatre), Robby Ramos (Contigo/Signature Theatre), and Viviana Valeria (ROACH/Independent Film).
The creative team includes set design by Miguel Urbino, lighting design by Eric Cope, sound design by Andy Evan Cohen, costume design by Sherry Martinez, property design by Lilian Sun, stage management by Clarissa Marie Ligon, assistant stage managers Tai Thompson and Jessica Baird, production assistant Raquel Loving, technical director Ana Dratz, and assistant director Jennifer Weiser.
The Motherf**ker with the Hat extension runs November 30th to December 10th with performances Wednesday - Saturday at 8:00 pm. Prior to joining T. Schreiber Studio & Theatre as Artistic Director, Peter Jensen was a member of the Core Faculty of the American Academy of Dramatic Arts and served as the 3rd year Academy Company Director. He studied with Terry Schreiber, Uta Hagen, Chuck Olsen (Actor's Studio), 78th Street Theatre Lab. Directing credits at T. Schreiber include Hot L Baltimore nominated for NYIT Outstanding Production, Balm in Gilead winner of the 2011 NYIT Award for Outstanding Production The Pillowman, Lobby Hero, Joking Apart, Hurlyburly, A Taste of Honey, Marvin's Room, You Can't Take It With You, The Real Inspector Hound, The Actor's Nightmare, Fifth of July and Doubt. Other NY directing credits include the premier of John Patrick Shanley's Poisen and Incendiary Agents with Nylon Fusion, The Glass Menagerie at the Sanford Meisner Theatre. Regionally Danny and the Deep Blue Sea and Biloxi Blues. Peter directed his first film Danni written by Diane Reilly premiering this fall, As an actor starred in films Metamorphosis, The Bite, The Father, the PBS Reel Short Contest winner, A Memory, as well as Unexpected Company, The Trailer Park Prophet, and Razor.
T. Schreiber Theatre, under the Artistic Direction of Terry Schreiber and Peter Jensen began operations in conjunction with Terry Schreiber's acting studio in 1969, at the beginning of the Off-Off Broadway movement.
