SUMMER&SMOKE is Williams' only play to focus on a pair of twenty-somethings. BASiC's revival narrows that focus to the millennial voice, infusing the text with new immediacy for 2015. Two souls spend their lives orbiting one another, trying desperately to break down the other's notions of love, the soul, and the body - only to learn that heartbreak is most often out of your control, that growth can only come from collision and explosion. This production puts Williams' text in conversation with the time periods inherent to the revival -- turn-of-the-century American South, Williams' post-war Manhattan, and NYC today -- by examining the universality and timelessness of heartbreak, and how we move on.
The BASiC Theatre Project was founded in 2012 by Zi Alikhan and Anthony Jackson as a theatre company dedicated to creating socially aware performance for the millennial generation. Over the past three years, BASiC has produced classics and new works across NYC partnering with prominent organizations and festivals, most notably The Drama League (with whom they are in residence in 2015, creating their new play, THE GRIND) and GayFestNYC.
BASiC's SUMMER&SMOKE features Therese Anderberg as Alma and Benjamin Katz as John, with Michelle Uranowitz, Sarah Naughton, Jerry Lee, and Jason Silverman. SUMMER&SMOKE is directed by BASiC Artistic Director, Zi Alikhan, produced by BASiC and Executive Director Anthony Jackson and designed by Jason Simms, David Moyer, and Rich Johnson.
