The fifth season of New York Theatre Barn's Choreography Lab commences on Monday, April 16, 2018 at 2pm at The Cell. The Choreography Lab is the only curated choreography platform where choreographers and writers collaborate to develop movement for new musicals during incubation.
In our annual New Works Lab, four choreographers will present a number from four diverse new musicals. The writers of these shows are often seeing these pieces on their feet for the first time, offering all creative parties an opportunity to truly assess the material. The featured choreographers are Shan Y Chuang, Shiloh Goodin, Breton Tyner-Bryan, and Mandarin Wu. The four featured musicals are Chasing Fear (book by Blake McCarty, music and lyrics by Trevor Bachman), Cotton Candy & Cocaine (book and lyrics by EllaRose Chary, music and lyrics by Brandon James Gwinn), Eastbound (book and music by Cheeyang Ng, book and lyrics by Khiyon Hursey), and The Lesson (book, music, and lyrics by Avi Amon and Nolan Doran). Chasing Fear will be featured in Theatre Barn's May 21, 2018 New Works Series. Eastbound was featured in Theatre Barn's 2017 New Works Series, is the recipient of the 2017 IMPACT Award, and will have a developmental production produced in November 2018 in collaboration with The Cell.
Curated by Avital Asuleen, The Choreography Lab works to elevate and expand the use of dance in musical theatre. The lab's unique programming supports choreographer development, fosters collaboration between writers and choreographers earlier in the creative process, and serves as an educational forum where all parties can strengthen and specify how dance can be used to convey story and character. Lab consultants are Adolpho Blaire and Christopher Noffke.
The Cell is located at 338 West 23rd Street in New York City. Tickets are $10 in advance and $15 at the door, and can be purchased on New York Theatre Barn's website: www.nytheatrebarn.org. Seating is limited.
New York Theatre Barn is a Manhattan-based non-profit theatre company, founded in 2007, dedicated to incubating and producing new musicals that tell untold stories. Our stories are inspired by the lives of real people and actual events that challenge our preconceived ideas, and promote inclusion and positive social change. In today's divisive political and social climate, we believe that now more than ever, these types of stories need to be seen and heard by more people. For more information: www.nytheatrebarn.org.
