Anticipating the outcome of Election 2016, many are eyeing exit routes to other countries. Waste, Fraud and Abuse offers another universe. Don't worry; the corruption, cynicism and banality are still there, but while our country's election features base vapidity, racism and hectoring, this rollicking musical, running for three weekends in October (Thursday, Friday, and Saturday at 8 p.m., October 6-8, 13-15, 20-22) features wit, satire and clever songs.
When Audrey and Ron get a divorce, they take the rest of the country with them. Waste, Fraud and Abuse is the tune-packed tale of a presidential campaign gone bananas, with protesters in the streets, shady deals in the boardroom, sex in the war room, and a walrus in the bathtub! It's a fast-paced and wry evisceration of the love of politics and the politics of love.
The Screaming Majority, a songwriting collective fronted by Dan Kilian and Dave Benjoya, started out writing politically satirical topical songs for Sam Seder's Majority Report podcast. They then turned their minds toward writing and producing this musical. After they debuted with a one-night premier at the Judson Memorial, their leading lady, Bryna Kearney, asked to direct the reconfiguration.
After months of work, the show is ready for the election season. Featuring such songs for our times as "Let's Get a Divorce," "Craptastic" and "E Pluribus Unum," this production is destined to be a hit, or at least to provide the sound track you'll be humming through November.
"We're the opposite of Hamilton," says writer/producer Dave Benjoya, "Instead of an innovative musical about the man who made the United States what it is, this is an old-fashioned musical about destroying the country!"
Whether you're sick of the election or whipping yourself up into a frenzy, Waste, Fraud and Abuse is just the tonic you need. The 13th Street Repertory Theater is at 50 West 13th Street.
