After a run this summer in the NY International Fringe Festival, writer/performer Terri Mateer is set to present her humorous, inspiring and thought-provoking solo show "a kind shot" on Tuesday, November 18 at 7pm at the Nuyorican Poets Café (236 East 3rd Street).
It's an honest, no-holds-barred personal account that chronicles Mateer's years as a professional basketball player, aspiring architect, and model. Terri has spent two years developing the show and Seth Barrish, Co-Artistic Director of The Barrow Group, worked on the piece as a Dramaturg. (Barrish developed and directed the award-winning solo pieces The Tricky Part and All the Rage by Martin Moran.). "a kind shot" was also listed by Award-winning producer Ken Davenport as "One of The Top Ten Shows to see at FringeNYC 2014."
"Keep going, have heart, play defense and make your free throws!"
Terri Mateer is a former professional basketball player turned landscape architect, and "a kind shot" showcases her blunt and off-the-cuff story telling abilities as she shares some of the most outrageous moments and events from her life...like being 6 foot 1 in the 6th grade...having a hippy mom...having a surrogate father who was African American...getting scouted by colleges in the 9th grade...playing Pro-Ball in France...and the trials and tribulations of being a designer for a top-tier architect. Terri has performed her show in front of live audiences at The Barrow Group, Under St. Marks, and rehearses in many gardens in Woodstock, NY where she runs a landscaping company.
Over the last 40 years, the Nuyorican Poets Café has served as a home for groundbreaking works of poetry, music, theater and visual arts. A multicultural and multi-arts institution, the Cafe gives voice to a diverse group of rising poets, actors, filmmakers and musicians who have not yet found consistent havens for their work. The Cafe champions the use of poetry, jazz, theater, hip hop and spoken word as means of social empowerment for minority and underprivileged artists. Our community of spectators, artists and students is a reflection of New York City's diverse population; Allen Ginsberg called the Cafe "the most integrated place on the planet." Over the past several decades, the Cafe has emerged as one of the country's most highly respected arts organizations and has become an acclaimed forum for innovative poetry, music, hip hop, video, visual arts, comedy and theatre.
Terri Mateer will perform "a kind shot" on Tuesday, November 18th at 7:00PM at the Nuyorican Poets Café (236 East 3rd Street). Tickets are $10 and can be purchased online at www.TerriMateer.com.
