Within this space of uncertainty, the acknowledgment that duende can only exist with the realization of our impending death becomes both unsettling and clear...
DUENDE ADENTRO by Al Margen Flamenco Company has its world premiere as part of Teatro Círculo's SPRINGseries2018 which presents new or already staged works from artistic collaborations that had included Flamenco, Commedia dell' Arte, monologues, short plays. This year it runs alongside CALLBACKseries2018 which takes a second glance at projects with previous limited engagements by independent artists, fostering and supporting work whose artistic merits and the audience response make them worthy of a second exposure.
Al Margen productions are deeply rooted in tradition, but at the same time, they explore issues that bring original interpretations. In DUENDE ADENTRO, the García Lorca concept of "duende" takes a new meaning. Distancing themselves from the passionate stereotype which traditionally is associated with el duende, María de los Ángeles and Ryan Rockmore re-imagine the concept inspired by the essay "La teoría del duende" -Duende's Theory- and poems from "Diván del Tamarit" by Federico García Lorca.
Al Margen is a New York-based flamenco dance company that explores traditional boundaries in the form through a contemporary lens. It seeks to challenge the stereotypical ideas of flamenco and strip the style down to its most basic elements as we attempt to discover, "What is flamenco?" Al Margen is entering its second year as a company in residence at Teatro Círculo. After presenting their work "Adorno" for SPRINGseries2017, Rockmore and de los Ángeles are now creating DUENDE ADENTRO. Through multimedia and interdisciplinary approaches to the form, Al Margen continues to push the boundaries of flamenco, with respect to traditional customs, and explore what exists on the margins of the art form.
DUENDE ADENTRO was conceived by internationally renowned flamenco artists María de los Ángeles and Ryan Rockmore and will be on stage with artists of different disciplines; the guitarist Raphael Brunn, composer Nathan Herrera, singer Alfonso Cid, the cellist Lisa Fairey, and palmera Adriana Olivares with the collaboration of Adriana Sananes' recorded readings of Federico García Lorca's texts. The Lighting design is by María Cristina Fusté and Costume design is by Sally Lesser.
