Cherry Picking is an annual opportunity for writers, both established and burgeoning, to create new material for performance in one night of staged reading. Each year, a group of producers gathers and develops the theme for Cherry Picking. This annual meeting allows the creative team to examine issues that are somehow charged. This may be a hot topic politically, a fascinating sociological phenomenon, a nagging question, a captivating image, and so on.

A "Call for Submissions" is distributed and writers are invited to tackle the challenge of writing a short play based on the given theme or assignment. This year's theme is "Sweet Sixteen."

Expect special live presentations from the podcasts You're the Expert, Flash Forward, and The Story Collider, new talks by The Atlantic's Ed Yong, Ars Technica's Annalee Newitz, the premier of a new live show by SNL's Will Stephen, and much more.

Uncertain Stories: a conversation with Ed Yong and Maria Konnikova

Stories are one of the oldest and most effective ways to make sense of the world. And yet, in science writing, sometimes the demands of making a good story work against the goals of presenting an accurate picture of science, especially when research is full of uncertainties and unknowns. On August 13th, Ed Yong and Maria Konnikova, two of the best science writers working today will discuss that tension and how they approached it in their respective new books-I Contain Multitudes, about microbiomes and the amazing partnerships between animals and microbes; and The Confidence Game, about the minds, motives, and methods of con artists.

Saturday, August 13 at 7:30pm and 9:30pm

You're the Expert

Tickets $20

You're the Expert is a live show, podcast, and new public radio program on 90.9 WBUR, Boston's NPR station. The radio show uses comedy to make academic research more accessible and exciting. Through game show segments and hilariously misguided guesses, a panel of comedians will try to get to the bottom of what a distinguished scientist studies all day. You won't want to miss being part of the audience for this live show and podcast taping. You're the Expert is hosted by Chris Duffy and produced by Pretty Good Friends.

Sunday, August 14 at 4pm

The Fragmented Past, with Annalee Newitz, Karen Kupperman, and Kate Downey

What does it mean to lose a city? Can we know who made hand-prints in ancient caves? What's hiding just out of sight right in our own places?

It's easy to think we know the past, that it's a simple story about what happened before we got here. It's also easy to think the past is a mystery, fundamentally unknowable because of the impossibility of going back to check. The truth is rather wonderfully and frustratingly in between, and studying the past is a constant struggle to understand what we can and can't know.

Join us August 14th for three vignettes on how to piece together the fragmented past, from Ars Technica tech culture editor Annalee Newitz, NYU professor Karen Kupperman, and Museum Hack tour guide Kate Downey.

Monday, August 15 at 8pm

Flash Forward Live: Expiration Date

Flash Forward is a podcast about the future. Every episode we take on a different possible (or not so possible) future scenario and try to really overthink what it might be like - everything from the existence of artificial wombs, to what would happen if space pirates dragged a second moon to Earth.

Join host Rose Eveleth for a live performance and interactive adventure. If you could find out the exact day you would die, would you?

Tuesday, August 16 at 8pm

The Story Collider

Tickets $10

Now, more than ever, science is a part of everyone's life. At The Story Collider, you'll hear from scientists about all the times things went wrong, and occasionally right, in their labs, but you'll also hear from people who haven't had a formal connection to science since high school. We have physicists, comedians, neuroscientists, writers, actors, doctors, and many, many more telling their story. Some are heartbreaking; some are hilarious. They're all true, and all, in one way or another, are about science.
