THE CONGRESSWOMEN (Ecclesiazusae ?κκλησι?ζουσαι) is believed to have first premiered in Greece in 392 BC. Aristophanes' comedy revolves around the shifting dynamics of traditional gender roles, as well as the political & economic differences they represent.
As the women take charge of the government, the once powerful men must nervously negotiate their new place in society. Just in time for the 2018 midterm elections, Ducdame Ensemble's hilarious adaptation of this timeless comedy asks, "Who will be left to pick up the pieces from the Battle of the Sexes?"
DUCDAME ENSEMBLE was founded by graduates of the Masters' Degree in Classical Acting program from the London Academy of Music & Dramatic Art (LAMDA). The company's inaugural production, a new adaptation of Lope De Vega's Fuente Ovejuna, received a FringeNYC Overall Excellence Award in 2015. Director Shira Milikowsky is also returning to the New York International Fringe Festival, where her production of Mourn the Living Hector, by Paul Cohen, won an Overall Excellence Award in 2008. Milikowsky is an alumna of the Drama League Directing Fellowship, a recipient of the Henry Luce Scholarship & an Associate Lecturer at Harvard University. She holds an MFA in directing from Columbia & a BA in Theatre Studies from Yale.
